On Common Ground (OCG) is a mission-based SNAP-Ed program aimed at connecting the Washoe County community with nutritious food, education and tools to help adults and children meet their potential. On Common Ground provides educational messaging, utilizing the Dietary Guidelines of America, to help initiate behavior change for SNAP-eligible residents of Washoe County. OCG has conducted focus group assessments and a vulnerability and susceptibility analysis to identify leading factors impeding health behavior of downtown Reno residents. Their findings showed that downtown Reno is a food desert with limited access to fresh food, but a heightened accessibility to public transportation. On Common Ground is interested in developing a centralized one-stop shop grocery store into downtown Reno to increase food security and access.

We support On Common Ground and partner agencies’ plans to implement a community farmer and grocery market, and are in a position to provide expertise and engagement in nutrition and health, food preparation, and several programs for children, youth, and families.  We believe implementation of the OCG farmers Market and community groceries within urban Reno could be key to improving lives of people of Washoe County, as well as strengthening our community.

On Common Ground targets Washoe County residents with limited access to nutritious foods. While On Common Ground casts a wide net it is directed toward persons living in low access areas, lacking transportation, and those who are being negatively impacted by their limited access to healthy foods.

We have verbal support and are working toward further statements of support from St. Marys hospital, Washoe County Health Dept, Community Health Alliance (CHA), Food Bank of Northern Nevada, St. Vincents and other area partners both for- and non-profit. Lots of community support for our fundraising and awareness campaigns, including UUFNN, Reno Buddhist Center, Rounds Bakery, several area eateries and retailers for silent auction prizes, and others.
