Pick a better snack™/Chefs for Kids provides nutrition education for 2nd and 3rd grade students in high-needs schools.  The program’s goal is too increase preference for fresh fruits and veggies through education and food tastings.  Extension nutrition educators collaborate with school wellness coordinators and programs to implement a stronger and meaningful school wellness program.

Second and third grade students receive direct instruction, wellness newsletters for the family, “bingo” cards that promote healthy eating and physical activity and food tastings once each month. Wellness efforts are implemented throughout the school year with Smarter Lunchroom assessments, signage promoting healthy foods and physical activity; wellness events such as field day activities, Jump Rope for Heart, cooperation with school gardens, yoga classes, etc. These wellness efforts influence both our primary and secondary audiences.

Audiences Served

Pick A Better Snack’s target audience is second and third grade students from high needs schools in the Clark and Washoe County School Districts. Wellness efforts reach a secondary audience of the entire student body, school staff and families of students.
